Vehicle Fitments & Swap Potential

This 1GZ-FE powertrain is the primary choice for:

  • 1997-2017 Toyota Century (GZG50): Direct OEM replacement.

  • Toyota Supra (A80/MK4) Swap: The legendary "Top Secret" style V12 conversion.

  • Custom Restomods: A popular choice for high-end Toyota Land Cruiser (J80/J100) and Lexus LS conversions.

Technical Insight: The 1GZ-FE features two independent ECUs (one for each 6-cylinder bank), allowing the engine to run as an inline-6 in the event of a sensor failure—a testament to its "failure-is-not-an-option" design.

Installation & Technical Notes

Due to the complexity of a 12-cylinder engine, please adhere to these technical guidelines:

  • Dual ECU Management: For custom swaps (Supra/LS), we strongly recommend utilizing a standalone engine management system (e.g., Haltech, MaxxECU, or Motec) to simplify the wiring and unlock the true power potential, which can easily exceed 500+ HP with bolt-ons.

  • Oil System: The 1GZ-FE utilizes a large oil capacity. Ensure the oil cooler lines are properly flushed and that high-quality 5W-30 or 0W-30 synthetic oil is used to maintain the VVT-i phasers.

  • Physical Dimensions: Measuring approximately 32 inches long, this engine is a tight fit for most engine bays. Ensure your chassis can accommodate the length and the 60° bank angle.

  • Essential Maintenance: We recommend replacing the following during the swap:

    • Spark Plugs: 12x NGK Iridium plugs (BKR6EIX-11).

    • Gaskets: Intake manifold gaskets and valve cover gaskets (highly recommended as they are difficult to access once installed).

    • Serpentine Belt: Replace the main drive belt and inspect the hydraulic fan pump (if equipped).

  • Fuel Requirement: 91+ Octane Premium fuel is required to ensure the knock sensors do not pull timing on this high-displacement assembly.
